Description

The Will search
  • In Quebec, to begin the settlement of an estate, it is essential to conduct will searches to verify whether the deceased left a will or to verify that the available will is indeed the last one made.
  • These searches must be obtained from two key authorities: the Chamber of Notaries of Quebec and the Quebec Bar Association, thereby ensuring that all of the deceased’s wishes are respected in accordance with the law.
  • First and foremost, make sure you have the official death certificate in your possession.  However, to avoid additional delays, we can begin processing the searches with a death certificate. The official death certificate is required for you to receive the results of the will search.
  • Please note that a supplementary search can also be conducted through L'Autotestament. In fact, various will kits offered by this company were in use from 1980 to May 2013, and more than 10,000 wills were completed, signed, and returned for safekeeping to the office of the notary responsible for L'Autotestament.
  • If the search results from L'Autotestament are positive, additional instructions will be sent to you on how to obtain the original will.
  • Discover a wealth of information about settling or liquidating an estate by visiting our legal FAQ.
  • Depending on the date of death, the results will be mailed to you within 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the time taken by the authorities concerned to issue the search certificates.
