The declaration of inheritance serves, in particular, to:
- Identify the legal heirs ;
- Establish the devolution of the estate in accordance with the Civil Code of Quebec;
- Confirm the deceased's civil status as well as their matrimonial regime or civil union, if applicable;
- Appoint a liquidator when a declaration of inheritance is required;
- Facilitating administrative procedures with banks, insurance companies and government agencies;
- Facilitate the settlement and liquidation of the estate by providing official proof of heirship.
