Can funeral expenses be paid if one wishes to renounce the inheritance?

Yes, generally. Personally paying the deceased's funeral expenses does not, in itself, preclude renouncing the inheritance.

A person can therefore pay or personally commit to paying funeral expenses without necessarily accepting the inheritance.

However, a distinction must be made between paying these expenses with one's own money and using funds or bank accounts belonging to the deceased. A person considering renouncing an inheritance should avoid disposing of the estate's assets or money as if they were their own.

The person who pays for the funeral expenses should keep the invoices, receipts, and proof of payment. Depending on the circumstances, they may be entitled to reimbursement from the estate or certain death benefits.

However, paying funeral expenses and reimbursing them are two separate issues. Paying these expenses does not necessarily mean that the estate will be able to reimburse them in full, especially if the estate's assets are insufficient to cover all its debts.
