What is the purpose of a declaration of heirs?

The declaration of heirs makes it possible, in particular, to:

  • identify the persons entitled to inherit the estate;
  • to establish their status as heirs;
  • to enable the future executor or, failing that, the heirs to take certain steps necessary for the settlement of the estate;
  • facilitate communication with financial institutions, government authorities, and other parties involved;
  • to safeguard the steps taken before the heirs have accepted or renounced the estate.
