What is an "assumed name" or a "reserved name"?

An assumed name allows the business corporation to become identified under a name other than its corporate name in order to exercise its activities. An assumed name is often used in the presence of a business corporation with a numbered name. The business corporation must, however, indicate in a readable manner the name under which it is incorporated on all the negotiable instruments, contracts, invoices, etc. and on its legal documents so that the public knows with whom it is doing business.
