The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and the Small Vessel Regulations stipulate that the vessels form part of the category of small vessels if they have among others a gross tonnage equal to or less than 15 gross tons. The Small Vessel Regulations also apply to a pleasure craft, the latter being thus considered as a small vessel. A pleasure craft is the one which is used for pleasure and does not carry passengers; it is also the one which can be equipped, permanently or temporarily, with an engine whose aggregate power is at least 7.5 kW (9.9 power).
