What boats must be registered?

All vessels that exceed 15 gross tonnage and which are not a pleasure craft must necessarily be registered in the Canadian Register of Vessels.

Note that small commercial vessels must be registered with Transport Canada's Small Vessel Register (this register does not allow for registration of mortgages, liens or vessel names) or, if the owner wishes to, the Canadian Register of Vessels .

It is the vessel owner's responsibility to ensure that its vessel is registered.
