Legal principle according to which an heir of the deceased who has predeceased the latter is represented by his descendants (children, grandchildren and so on) for the share of the deceased's assets.
For example, François has two children, Natalie and Louise, who each have three children. Louise dies while François is still alive. Upon François' death, Natalie will receive half (1/2) of François' property and Louise's children will share the other half.
The representation is automatic if the deceased did not leave a will. However, if the deceased made a will, the representation must be expressly stated in said will for this rule to apply.
