Liquidator

The liquidator, formerly called the executor, is the person who deals with the settlement of an estate.

The main tasks of the liquidator are:

  • Identify the heirs and contact them;
  • Open an account in the name of the estate and close the various accounts of the deceased;
  • Make an inventory of the assets and debts of the deceased;
  • Collect any amount of money due to the deceased;
  • File income tax returns for the deceased;
  • Pay the debts of the deceased;
  • Distribute the legacies to the legatees and/or heirs of the deceased;

Note that several people acting together may be considered as the liquidator.

The liquidator is usually named in the will of the deceased or, failing a will, he may be appointed by the heirs/legatees through a notice of appointment of liquidator.
