Agricultural zoning

The Act respecting the preservation of agricultural land and agricultural activities was passed in 1978 to ensure the maintenance of a territorial base for the practice of agricultural activities and to promote the protection and the development of agricultural activities and businesses.

The entry into force of the Act respecting the preservation of agricultural land and agricultural activities has gradually led, between 1978 and 1981, to the creation of an agricultural area, we sometimes speak of "green area", inside which soils and environment shall be protected and preserved for agricultural purposes.

In the agricultural area, most land transactions involving a subdivision, use, alienation, inclusion or exclusion of a lot, shall be subject to authorization of the "Commission de protection du territoire agricole du Québec".

The purpose of this Commission is to secure the preservation of the agricultural land of Quebec. It is responsible for implementing the provisions of the Act respecting the preservation of agricultural land and agricultural activities and the Act respecting the acquisition of farm land by non-residents.
