Flood-risk area

A flood-risk area is an area of ​​land occupied by a lake or watercourse when it elevates beyond its usual course (during flood periods). Flood-risk area are classified into two elevation groups or areas, according to their flood frequency. There are areas with a 0- to 20-year flood elevations where flood risk is 5% each year. As for the 20 to 100-year flood elevations areas have a 1% chance of flooding each year.

The Quebec government and the federal government signed an agreement to adopt policies to reduce the damage caused by the floods. This agreement, the Agreement Between the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec Respecting Flood Risk Mapping Applied to Flood Plain Preservation and Sustainable Development of Water Resources has led to the implementation of the mapping program. This program has contributed to the achievement of an official mapping of flood areas in the territory of about 245 municipalities.
