Registrar of civil status

The Directeur de l'état civil (Registrar of civil status) is the sole public officer that holds the authority to keep the register of civil status in the Province of Quebec. Since 1994, it is the only registrar that is authorized to draw up and modify acts of birth, marriage, civil union and death, and issue genuine documents related to these events.
