Do de facto spouses have the same rights as married spouses?

No, de facto spouses do not have the same rights as married spouses or civil union spouses. Only marriage and civil union create legal rights and obligations between spouses. These legal obligations do not thus extend to de facto spouses. So, de facto spouses are under no obligation between them to the duties and obligations of spouses. The Civil Code of Quebec recognizes to de facto spouses certain rights, very limited, by virtue of specific provisions. It is necessary to underline that several particular laws have, over the years, conferred rights to de facto spouses.
