Why must we proceed to an inventory?

It is necessary to proceed to an inventory of the assets and liabilities of the deceased so that his heirs are not required to pay the debts of the succession beyond the value of the property that they receive.

The inventory also allows the successors to determine if the succession is solvent or not and thereby to exercise their option : accept or renounce the succession depending on whether the succession is solvent or insolvent.
